RAM is your laptop’s working space.
Memory holds the things you are using right now. Storage keeps the things you save. Buying more of one does not replace the other.
8GB, 16GB or 32GB?
8GB can serve light, focused tasks, especially on a cloud-first device. For a new general-purpose Windows or Mac laptop, we usually start at 16GB. Heavy creative work, virtual machines and large datasets can justify 32GB or more.
What more memory buys
More memory helps when your active work exceeds the available space. It does not automatically make simple tasks faster, and it cannot fix a poor screen or slow processor.
Check before checkout
Many laptops have soldered memory. If memory cannot be upgraded, choose enough for the work you expect to do. Verify the exact SKU: the same family can be sold with different amounts.
